Chikungunya in French Guiana
As of 21 May 2026, a total of 249 laboratory confirmed chikungunya cases have been reported in French Guiana since the first locally acquired case was reported in January 2026. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on chikungunya.
Dengue in New Caledonia
As of 21 May 2026, a total of 1,786 dengue cases have now been reported in New Caledonia since January 2026. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on dengue.
Ebola disease in DRC
As of 22 May 2026, a total of 82 confirmed and 750 suspected Ebola disease cases, with seven confirmed and 177 suspected deaths, have now been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on Ebola disease.
Chikungunya in Mauritius
On 2 April 2026, the Ministry of Health and Wellbeing reported a significant increase in chikungunya cases. At the time, 105 active cases were reported, particularly in the regions of Rose-Hill, Quatre-Bornes, and Roches Brunes. On May 14, 2026 the US CDC issued a Travel Alert regarding an increased risk of chikungunya to travellers visiting Mauritius. Mpox in Taiwan
On 19 May 2026, Taiwan reported the first imported case of clade Ib mpox. The case had visited Thailand and reported unsafe sexual activity. Please see our Topics in Brief for further details on mpox.
Murray Valley encephalitis in Australia
On 19 May 2026, local health authorities in the Northern Territory reported two deaths from Murray Valley encephalitis. Both cases were reported from Alice Springs, one in April and the other in May 2026. Travellers should avoid mosquito bites.
Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in Afghanistan
As of 18 May 2026, 152 suspected cases (six deaths) of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) were reported during April 2026. This represents a 141% increase compared to 63 cases and five deaths reported in the March 2026. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on CCHF.
Hantavirus - cruise ship
On 18 May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that a total of 11 cases of Andes virus (nine confirmed and two probable), including three deaths have been reported in relation to the outbreak which began on the MV Hondius cruise ship. Previous reports from WHO state that confirmed cases are being treated and isolated in a number of countries (France, Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland, and USA). MERS-CoV in France and Saudi Arabia
Between January 2025 and 29 April 2026, there have been 19 human cases of MERS reported – 17 reported by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and two reported by France in December 2025 in individuals who had travelled to the Middle East.
